Language and Literacy
The Language and Literacy department provides high-quality professional learning to help educators develop expertise in curriculum, instruction, and assessment using the English Language Arts (ELA)/English Language Development (ELD) Framework to guide the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in ELA/Literacy and the California ELD Standards.
Additionally, the department supports the implementation of Ethnic Studies courses as part of the graduation requirement, promotes the adoption of inclusive curricula that reflect diverse perspectives and experiences, advances the State Seal of Civic Engagement, and provides resources for effective History/Social Science instruction. Inclusive curricula ensure that all students see themselves represented in the content they study, with materials that celebrate diverse cultures, backgrounds, and contributions, fostering a more equitable and culturally responsive educational environment.
We provide leadership and support in the following areas:
- Early Literacy/ Structured Literacy
- Ethnic Studies
- Classroom application of the ELA/ELD standards and framework
- English learner program design and implementation including integrated and designated ELD
- Title III
- Bilingual program development and implementation
- Civic engagement
The department offers workshops, institutes, and follow-up coaching which can be tailored to the individual needs of districts and schools.
