SJCOE Collects 2,500 Books for Library on Wheels

Early literacy is rolling in San Joaquin County on the Training Wheels story-time bus!

That’s why the SJCOE set a goal to collect 2,500 donated books, to ensure that children would be able to take a book home with them when Training Wheels visits. Over the past year, SJCOE staff and community members have donated to the cause, and the target number was reached this month.

A program of the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, Training Wheels is a mobile early literacy vehicle that travels to preschools and daycare centers. Each visit includes a special storytime where children ages 0-5 and their teachers and caregivers enjoy stories, songs and poetry.

The book drive supports the countywide push to improve early literacy. It is the focus of  San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Troy Brown’s Early Literacy Initiative. It is also the focus of the San Joaquin County Early Literacy Community of Practice, which brings together educators from school districts across the county.
