Finding Connection through the ChalleNGe
After dropping their children off at Discovery ChalleNGe Academy (DCA) for 22 weeks, many parents leave with a mix of pride and heartache — proud of their child’s decision to change their life, yet feeling as though a piece of their heart is missing. For a few of these parents, that sense of loss became an opportunity for growth. By enrolling in Parent Project, a 10-week program designed to help families rebuild and strengthen relationships, they found a new community.
For Robert and Tiffany, two parents in the current cohort, the experience has been life-changing. Both shared similar stories of watching their children commit to transformation at DCA — and realizing they wanted to do the same.
“During orientation, my son was hesitant about joining, so I told him I would sign up for Parent Project while he was here,” said Tiffany. “It was a way for me to be there with him without being there with him.”
For Robert, that shared understanding was also key. “Our kids need something different, and this provides that,” he said. “They give you ingredients and skills that can apply across multiple issues. You learn to coach instead of just reacting to problems at home.”
Parent Project would not be possible without the leadership of Lindsey Clark, Family Engagement Program Manager at the SJCOE. “I have been facilitating Parent Project classes for several years, and I believe in this program to my very core,” she said.
Being a parent herself, Lindsey knows firsthand that raising kids is not easy. She is honored to be able to provide a space where parents can strengthen their relationships with their children and build a community with one another.
“I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to share the gift of Parent Project multiple times a year, and I have no plans on slowing down anytime soon,” Lindsey said.
