Cowbells and Cheers

Cowbells and Cheers

The building filled with the sound of applause and cowbells, a joyful signal that another student had just completed their final presentation and earned their high school diploma through Come Back Kids (CBK).

CBK is a free program offered through the San Joaquin County Office of Education that helps anyone 18 years and older earn their high school diploma.

As part of their presentations, students shared reflections on their personal growth, insights on the program and curriculum, their work experience, and future career goals. Among those students presenting were Victoria Corona and Angelique Baker.

After turning 56, Victoria Corona decided to pursue her goal to become a substance abuse counselor. But she first needed to complete her high school diploma. Enrolling in CBK was her first step — and one that inspired her family more than she realized. Her daughter, Rosemarie, followed her lead and enrolled in CBK with her. Shortly after, two more of Victoria’s children and her husband also enrolled. With a new commitment to their education, the family has since worked and supported one another through their educational journeys.

“It feels amazing to have my family working on their education together,” Victoria said. “We all had obstacles that prevented us from finishing, but I’m amazed that my children are doing this to further their education and themselves.”

Rosemarie often came home from work in the past year to find her mother working on classwork. Seeing that, she said, was inspiring. “I am very proud of her, and I wouldn’t be doing this without her,” she said.

For Angelique Baker, the journey was also fueled by family. She was around 80 credits short of graduation when she decided to return to school. Inspired by her children and encouraged by her sister and niece, both CBK graduates, Angelique enrolled in the program.

With her diploma in hand, Angelique plans to continue her education journey by joining a certified nursing assistant program. Her long-term goals include becoming a registered nurse and owning a business.

“I believe I can achieve my future goals,” she said.

Both Angelique and Victoria — who will sit beside her daughter at graduation — will cross the stage on Wednesday, May 21, at the Building Future Academy/CBK graduation ceremony at San Joaquin Delta College.

Victoria and her daughter will continue their education journeys together at San Joaquin Delta College this fall.
