Coming Together for Foster Youth

SJCOE and Stanislaus County Offices of Education host Second Annual Foster Youth Education Summit

Finding the strength inside themselves to cope with the effects of trauma is one of the skills young people in the foster system develop to heal and thrive.

They are not alone. They have help from the educators and other allies to help them develop those skills.

And the teachers, counselors, social workers, and group-home staffers serving these young people aren't alone, either. At the 2019 Foster Youth Education Summit in Stockton on June 21, these professionals from San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties came together to build connections and strengthen their own skills to be able to help the foster youth in their care find success.

Organized by the San Joaquin County and Stanislaus county offices of education, this is the second year the summit has been offered.

Finding inner resilience to cope with trauma was just one of the topics covered at workshops at the summit. Other sessions included: empowering youth by helping them become leaders, preparing young people for the future that follows foster care, and learning from a panel of former foster youth who have, themselves, become leaders and advocates.

About 100 participants attended the 2019 Foster Youth Education Summit, which was held at the Robert J. Cabral Agricultural Center in Stockton.
