San Joaquin County State of Education
The San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE), in partnership with the county’s school districts, hosts an annual San Joaquin County State of Education event to celebrate local education. The event brings together community leaders, elected officials, and local agencies with the educational community of San Joaquin County, which is home to 14 school districts and more than 155,000 students.
The second annual event, themed "Education for All: Full STEAM Ahead," highlighted efforts across the county to promote STEM, Arts, and STEAM education. The event featured a district showcase, where attendees engaged directly with students and staff to learn about the programs offered in local school districts and county programs. Following the showcase was a formal program led by County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Troy A. Brown and district superintendents that featured video spotlights highlighting efforts in each focus area and a panel focused on STEM education.

STEM
When students learn STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), they are learning about their world. They become explorers, learning how to analyze it, understand it, and describe what they discovered. It is this connection to the real world that makes STEM education so exciting. Innovative schools create engaging ways to equip their student-explorers for careers and all the adventures that await them in life.

ARTS
Arts education develops confidence, self-expression, and creativity. Through teaching the arts, local schools are also focusing on the “whole student,” supporting the development of social skills and providing an outlet that fosters well-being. Along the way, students are playing sweet music, sculpting works of art, wowing audiences in theatrical performances, and much more.

STEAM
STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) education is the synergy of creativity and critical thinking. Students use both, whether they are engineering a robot or planning a science project. Adding art builds an entry point for some students, too, expanding opportunities and making STEM education more inclusive.
Schools are building a stronger foundation for our county in everything they do. The stronger the foundation we build, the higher our county will climb. That is why coming together for a countywide State of Education is so important – to help cultivate relationships and build a network of support for public education.
