WorkStartYES* (Youth Employment Services) provides pre-employment and career education to Workforce Investment Act (WIA)-eligible youth ages 16-18. Career developers, in collaboration with WorkNet employment specialists provide students with work experience opportunities while they complete their high school education.
The program is designed to encourage high school graduation, provide the basic skills necessary to succeed in the workplace, develop an understanding of how school skills can be applied to a career, build responsible social attitudes and careers, provide an opportunity to earn money, and provide follow-up services and mentoring for one year after graduation.
Adult mentors work closely with students to provide tutoring and help them complete their pre-employment workshops and portfolios. Students are then referred to WorkNet who assists them in securing subsidized employment. Additionally, funds are available to provide supportive services either directly or through a referral process to assist students in overcoming any barriers they might face.
