Regional System of District and School Support (RSDSS)

Overview
The Statewide System of School Support (S4) was established in 1995 by the California Department of Education under the authority of Section 1117 of Title I, Improving America's Schools Act (IASA) of 1994. The S4 system provides intensive support to Title I schoolwide and program improvement schools and districts to help them improve students' opportunities to meet or exceed rigorous state and local content and performance standards. The system consists of the following support systems:

  • School Leadership teams
  • District learning support teams
  • Regional school support and improvement centers
  • Comprehensive Assistance Center
  • California Department of Education

Regional System of District and School Supports
THE S4 regional school support and improvement centers form the nucleus of the assistance offered to schools. Twelve centers in eleven regions throughout the state work cooperatively with school districts, the Department, and the two comprehensive assistance centers to encourage the Title I schools with 40% or more low-income children to become schoolwide programs. Schoolwide program schools are allowed to coordinate their state and federal funds and develop a comprehensive school improvement plan to benefit all children in the school. The centers also offer their services to Title I program improvement schools, schools participating in the Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration Program, (CSRD), Immediate Intervention Underperforming School Program (II/USP), and other Title I schools that request assistance.
