School wide Positive Behavior Support Institute
When: January 14, 2010 and January 21, 2010
Where: SJCOE, Wentworth Education Center (2707 Transworld Drive, Stockton)
Time: 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
The Institute for School Teams:
Each school site selects a School wide Positive Behavior Support (PBS) team, including the principal. The role of this team will be to guide the positive process throughout the year(s). A team will consist of five to seven members including positive leaders. Parents and key classified staff are key ingredients.
Teams will continue to work throughout the year, looking at positive behavior planning and how to put incentive programs in place for classrooms and school wide. They will look at office discipline referral data and how to implement that in decision making about the scope and intensity of behavioral issues on the campus.
These site teams lead the effort at their site, and usually require technical assistance and coaching throughout the year to remain on track. There will be challenges and setbacks as the effort progresses. PBS is not a place to attempt to rehabilitate problem staff.
Institute Days One and Two:
The concepts and tools of PBS will be covered in days one and two. Teams work together throughout the institute. By the end of the second day teams will have:
- Completed a self-assessment and set priority goals for the year
- Developed an action plan for approaching discipline and behavior for the year
- Identified a number of clearly defined school expectations for the campus
- The beginning of a school wide reward or acknowledgment system
- A plan for meeting regularly throughout the year
- Lesson plans for teaching behavioral expectations
- Times for teachers to teach behavioral expectations to students
- A plan for assessing the staff and approaching the staff at-large to assist them with the lesson plans
- A binder to represent a permanent product for organizing all PBS related tools
Follow up technical assistance days will be scheduled for participating sites between February and May 2011.
