SJCOEEF Raises Money at 27th Annual Golf Tournament

Student activities and events will benefit from the $50,000

It was all smiles and high-fives at the 27th Annual San Joaquin County Office of Education Educational Foundation (SJCOEEF) Golf Shootout on Aug. 7.

This year the Golf Shootout fundraiser netted more than $50,000. Funds raised will help support San Joaquin County student activities such as Mock Trial and the Academic Decathlon.

The fundraiser, held at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, is one of the successful events that the Foundation hosts each year. This year there were 144 golfers registered for the full-field scramble tournament. The fundraiser sold out almost six weeks before the event took place and had to begin a wait-list, according to Greg Clark, Development Director of SJCOEEF.

Warden’s Office Products took first place in the tournament with a team comprised of Jerry Warden, Joe Cunningham and Marc Lawless.

More than 80 businesses and individuals sponsored the fundraiser this year, ranging from $50 to $5,000. Financial Center Credit Union and Staples, both Platinum Sponsors for 2015, the highest level of sponsorship, have been supporters of the foundation for years.

“The Financial Center Credit Union has been a sponsor of SJCOE Educational Foundation for the last eight to ten years,” said Clark. “We have had a business relationship with Staples for the last three years.”

According to Clark, many of the businesses who sponsored the 2015 Golf Shootout also sponsor other events and activities throughout the year, such as student scholarships and the San Joaquin County Spelling Bee.

“Premier Community Credit Union, a Gold Sponsor, sponsored the Teacher of the Year event,” said Clark.

Annie Cunial, coordinator for SJCOE student events and activities said that fundraisers such as the Golf Shootout enhance the student competitions by allowing more students to register, as well as send students to the state-level competitions. Travelling to state competitions can be costly, and so money from the Foundation is often requested to help with expenses.

The Academic Pentathlon, Science Olympiad, Spelling Bee, Outdoor Education (Science Camp), Honor Choir and Honor Band, as well as other programs all benefit from fundraisers.

One of the goals of SJCOEEF is to support student programs and activities that connect students and schools with the community through positive relationships. As part of the mission statement, the Foundation was created to link public schools with businesses, individuals, and civic organizations to enhance self-esteem, academic achievement, and good citizenship of students.

The SJCOEEF was established in 1995 in part to help increase community input, involvement, and support of public education.
