San Joaquin County Spelling Bee

Students spelled their way to the top at the 18th Annual San Joaquin County Spelling Bee

T-E-T-A-N-U-S, “tetanus” … rolled off the tongue of James Quiaoit on December 3 allowing him to reign as the 2014/15 San Joaquin County Spelling Bee Champion of the Junior Division.

Quiaoit, along with more than 87 fourth- through ninth-grade San Joaquin County students competed in the 18th Annual San Joaquin County Spelling Bee Championship held at San Joaquin County Office of Education.

The Annual San Joaquin County Spelling Bee brings the best spellers in the County together for a competition designed to promote and acknowledge exemplary student achievement. These students previously won school or district spelling competitions in one of two grade categories—Elementary Division for fourth- through sixth-grades and Junior Division for seventh- through ninth-grades.

Quiaoit is a ninth-grade student at Sierra High School in Manteca Unified School District. He, along with Trinity Rico, a ninth-grade student at Middle College in Lodi Unified School District, will participate in the California State Junior High Spelling Bee Competition on May 2, 2015 at Miller Creek School in San Rafael, California.

The 2014/15 San Joaquin County Spelling Bee Champion of the Elementary Division, Caleb Terpsma, a sixth-grade student at Ripon Christian School, spelt the word bludgeon correctly to win the title. The runner-up is Sepenta Shirvan, a sixth-grade student at Brookside Elementary in Lincoln Unified School District.

Both students will move on to participate in the California State Elementary Spelling Bee Championship on April 18, 2015 at San Joaquin County Office of Education.

San Joaquin County Office of Education, the SJCOE Educational Foundation (SJCOEEF), and Premier Community Credit Union sponsored the event.
