Your district needs your voice

Cathy Nichols-Washer, Ed.D., Lodi Unified School District

It’s time for round two of the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and we need you! Last year all California districts made its way through temporary, and often vague, regulations about the new funding model. As we revisit our plans, we are modifying our processes based on what we have learned. In Lodi, as I’m sure is true in all districts, we aim to improve our process each year in order to develop a plan that helps all students succeed.

A significant component of the process is getting input from parents. We realize that evening meetings are difficult, but parents may not realize how much of an impact their voice can have on how money is spent. You can make a difference. Keep an eye out for announcements regarding your district’s budget. They might be labeled LCAP Meetings, Budget Meetings, or something similar. Staff will share your ideas about priorities for the district with your local school board members as they work through the budget planning process. The intent of the LCAP is to allocate money to fund programs and services that are important to the specific community. Your school district wants to hear your ideas on what is important for schools. Think about your child and what she or he needs to be successful in school and share those thoughts with your district. If you cannot attend a meeting, check your district’s website to learn about other ways to provide input.

Critical decisions are being made in each district about the educational program that is offered to the community. Parents have valuable insight to share about what is needed. We need your help to ensure that we all provide the very best education possible to each student in this County.
