Linden community honors veterans

By Linden Unified School District

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice was declared between Germany and the Allied nations. On this day, one year later, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day and that this day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory.”

For the 10th year, the community of Linden honored past and present military personnel on Tuesday, November 11. This annual event was started by community member, Marcella Lawson, in memory of 15 Linden High graduates that lost their lives while serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

The morning began with coffee and refreshments provided by the students of the Linden High School FHA-HERO class and their Advisor/Teacher, Laura Nealy. Led by the San Joaquin County Sea Cadets and Lieutenant Commander Marcia Powell, the flag was lowered, replaced, and raised again with a new flag followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a period of silence to honor those who had lost their lives serving our Country. Closing the Linden Veterans Memorial ceremony was a flyover performed by the Commemorative Air Force Central California Valley Squadron in a vintage WWII aircraft. At the conclusion of the flyover, 150 attendees made their way to the Linden High School Multipurpose Room for a musical performance by the students of the Linden Unified School District.

Under the direction of Mr. Ken Kell, student choirs from Waterloo, Waverly, Glenwood schools and Linden High School presented “The Spirit of America” a salute to our armed forces.  They sang a number of patriotic songs including The Star Spangled Banner, God Bless the USA, and America the Beautiful. Students also presented the history of the flag and inspirational presidential quotes.

After the performance honorees and community members dined on a lunch of lasagna, roast beef, salad, bread and homemade cookies prepared and served by the students in FHA-HERO.

Linden Unified thanks the Veterans for their service and for our freedom.
