Healthy Hearts and Haircuts

SJCOE Health Academy and Career Academy of Cosmetology helping community stay healthy and beautiful

Community members received free blood-pressure checks and haircuts from students and faculty from the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) Health Academy and Career Academy of Cosmetology.

Hundreds came to the all-day event, held recently at the studio that is both a classroom for students and a working salon for its customers.

People lined up for free haircuts, but they came to get their blood pressure checked, too.

A few of the more-than 100 people who came found out they had potential health problems that they might not have known about before. “They are going right to the doctor to check on it,” said Gail Van Grieken, an instructor at the Health Academy.

That’s not uncommon at these free screenings, she said. “We’ve had people come back to us and say: 'You helped save my life.'”
