California Mathematics Networks Forum 2015

Presenter Biographies

Those attending the California Mathematics Network Forum 2015 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education from May 18-20 will be able to hear from a number of presenters throughout the gathering.

They are:

Jeanie Behrend, CSU Fresno

Jeanie Behrend is a professor at Fresno State. As a graduate student of Tom Carpenter and Eliz Fennema, she was influenced by their vision of Cognitively Guided Instruction, including respect for all learners, the importance of listening and questioning, instruction built on children's thinking, and ongoing construction of knowledge.

Ivan Cheng, CSU Northridge

 Ivan Cheng is an Associate Professor at CSU Northridge, with over 30 years of teaching experience at both the secondary and postsecondary levels. He was among the first math teachers to be National Board certified in California and he provides professional development for schools and districts across the state.

Joan Easterday, California Mathematics Project

 In the development of the Statistics Institute, Easterday’s role is both as the Professional Development Chair for the California Mathematics Council, as well as a math lesson study facilitator for the California Mathematics Project: North Coast.

Joseph Robert Fiedler, CSU Bakersfield

 Professor Fiedler joined the CSU Bakersfield Department of Mathematics in 1989, where he currently teaches. He served on the 2012-13 California Framework and Evaluation Criteria Committee. Dr. Fiedler chairs the College Board’s Committee for the SAT Mathematics Subject Matter Examinations and consults on the rewrite of the SAT Math Examination.

Megan Franke, UCLA

 Megan Franke is a Professor of Education at UCLA.  Dr. Franke, along with her colleagues, supports and studies teachers as they make use of research-based information about the development of children’s mathematical thinking (CGI) in ways that create opportunities for low-income students of color to learn mathematics with understanding.

Margaret L. Kidd, CSU Fullerton

 Margaret Kidd is a CSU Fullerton Associate Professor of Mathematics and the Mathematics Credential Coordinator.  Prior to Fullerton, she taught from preschool through high school.  Her interest in mathematical modeling began when she taught the Mathematics:  Modeling Our World curriculum developed by COMAP and is presently on its board of directors.

Diane Kinch, TODOS, CAMTE CMP

 Diane has taught high school math for 30 years in Massachusetts, Nicaragua, Montana, Africa and in Pomona, CA. She works with mathematics teachers through the Math Project, LACOE, RCOE, Cal Poly Pomona and various school districts. Diane is president of CAMTE, a Director on the Board of TODOS and Past President of CMC-S.

Jane Liang, Ed.D., California Department of Education

 Jane Liang has served as a mathematics consultant at the California Department of Education (CDE) for nearly 10 years, first for the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program and then the California Assessment of Students Performance and Progress (CAASPP) system. Prior to joining the CDE, Dr. Liang was a classroom teacher and a school administrator in large urban school districts in San Francisco and Sacramento areas.

Karen Mayfield-Ingram, Lawrence Hall of Science

 Karen Mayfield-Ingram is Director of the NSF/Oakland Urban Teacher Residency Program. She also is a program coordinator for the Center for Equity and Excellence at the Lawrence Hall of Science. She has conducted numerous workshops and authored several publications and articles on mathematics and equity, equitable classrooms, teacher leadership and parent involvement.

Jim Short, Ventura County Office of Education

 Jim has taught high school math in both the United States and in Zimbabwe, teaching all levels of math, from ninth grade through Advanced Placement Calculus.  His work in teaching the Interactive Mathematics Program and providing professional development helped to transform, and now informs, his understanding of the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Margaret Smith, University of Pittsburgh

 Margaret Smith is a Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. She is the co-author of 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussion and was a member of the writing team for Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All.  She is currently creating materials to support Principles to Actions.

Lee V. Stiff, North Carolina State University

 Lee V. Stiff is Professor of Mathematics Education at North Carolina State University. From 2000 to 2002, he was President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He is President of EDSTAR Analytics, a consulting firm providing schools with data-driven decision models for student success and teacher effectiveness.

Mary Tribbey, California Department of Education

 Mary Tribbey has served as a CDE assessment fellow since 2014 and a program associate with the California Comprehensive Center at WestEd since 2010. Prior to joining WestEd, she was the Region 2 representative for the Regional Assessment Network and the Butte County Office of Education Assessment and Data Coordinator.
