Micke Grove’s Zoo Mobile program brings wildlife to students

Micke Grove’s Zoo Mobile program brings wildlife to students at Needham Elementary School

Sometimes, you don’t need to pack your child a sack lunch and rush to school before the field trip bus leaves, because the field trip will come to school instead.

The colorful jungle-themed Zoo Mobile from the Micke Grove Zoo parked outside of Needham Elementary School on Wednesday morning to give first-graders an experience with wildlife — without hurting the school’s transportation budget.

“It’s great because they don’t get a lot of opportunities like this,” said Needham teacher Susan Wise.

After coming in from recess, first-graders in Wise’s class were greeted by Natalie Sauerland next to a cart covered with animal furs and skins, which Sauerland referred to as biofacts.

As they passed, each student peered around her at the containers of animals hiding behind.

She showed them the different kinds of habitats that exist, such as deserts and rainforests, and asked students to name animals from each area.
