Academic decathlon will be held Saturday

LATHROP — Hundreds of students from 13 area high schools will compete Saturday at Lathrop High School in the county’s 34th annual Academic Decathlon in hopes of winning a spot in the state championships in March.

The initial testing portion of the competition takes place behind closed doors, but the popular Super Quiz is open to the public and begins at 2 p.m. in the gym at the school at 647 Spartan Way. An awards ceremony follows. Students will be tested on a variety of disciplines focused around this year’s theme, New Alternatives in Energy. Saturday’s event comes after essay, interview and speech competitions that took place last weekend at the San Joaquin County Office of Education.
