SJCOE awarded grant for civil rights education

The San Joaquin County Office of Education has been awarded grant funding through the National Park Service to provide professional development for civil rights education.

In collaboration with the Fred T. Korematsu Institute for Civil Rights and Education, the grant money provides professional development for four critical stories: the internment of Japanese-American citizens during World War II, Fred Korematsu’s story, the stories of California’s Assembly Centers and the personal stories of presenters in six regions across California.

Between September 2014 and December 2015, the California Legacy Voice Network will develop a statewide system connecting the children and grandchildren of Japanese-Americans interned during World War II with social studies professionals to form training teams. These teams will provide professional development to at least 100 teachers within each geographic region, to help focus attention on Japanese-American internment.
