SJC hosts Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Statewide

More than 200 educators and administrators attended the first Next Generation Science Standards Statewide Rollout event at SJCOE.

More than 200 educators and administrators attended the first Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Statewide Rollout event at San Joaquin County Office of Education in April.

On September 4, 2013, the State Board of Education (SBE) adopted the NGSS for California Public Schools, grades kindergarten through 12. Since then, through a collaborative, State-led process managed by Achieve, new K–12 science standards were developed that are rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education. NGSS is based on the Framework for K–12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson selected Kirk Brown, Director of Science and STEM Integration and Innovation at San Joaquin County Office of Education, to be part of the Science Expert Panel that helped provide recommendations on California’s version of the NGSS. Currently Kirk is working with the California Science Project to help write the CA NGSS Science Framework.
