Local students win prizes at County Science Fair

Students from Tracy, Jefferson and Lammersville school districts were big winners at the 56th Annual San Joaquin County Science Fair on March 6.

Over 1,200 students across 30 schools participated in the science fair, submitting more than 400 entries.

The class winner for the kindergarten through second grade division was awarded to Lammersville Unified School District’s Questa Elementary School second grade teacher Marisela Ruiz-Guitierrez for her students’ project on catapults.

Lammersville also took top honors in the third through fifth grade division with first, second and third place finishes.

First place went to Questa fourth grader Jacqueline Prawira for her project “Absorbency” with second and third going to Bethany School fourth grader Andrea Larson for her project “Is Soup Ready” and fifth grader Ashley Teele for “Hot Air Balloons.”

Receiving honorable mention was fourth grader Alisonn Remollino from St. Bernard’s Catholic School for her project “Rock Candy Experiment.”

Jefferson School District commanded the top two spots in the sixth through eighth grade division with seventh grader Bailey Henderson for “Zooming Through Fluency” and seventh grader Maddie McLeod for “What’s Your Style,” both of Hawkins School taking first and second place.

Third place went to sixth grader Carmon Brown of Questa for “Fire Starters” followed by Wicklund School’s sixth grader Ojas Nain receiving honorable mention for “Get Hurt, Make Cold at Home.”

In the ninth through 12th grade division, Tracy High school received awards for second, third and honorable mention.

Taking second place was Tracy senior Raul Lara for “Enhancing a Smoke Detector with a Visual,” followed by third place for senior Isfar Munir for “The Relationship Between Air Pressure and the Deflection Experienced by an Electric Arc-Yr.2;” and honorable mention went to junior Fanny Lopez-Flores for “Pedaling Power.”

In the environmental awards category, Hawkins seventh grader Brennan Hernandez won for his project “Can You Sea the Difference?” in the sixth through eighth grade division.
 
The winners were announced on March 6 and determined by over 35 professionals from the community who helped judge and conduct interviews, including countless volunteers.

Chosen to represent San Joaquin County Office of Education in the California State Science Fair in Los Angeles in April will be Tracy area students Henderson, McLeod, Brown, and Lara with alternates Nain and Munir.
