San Joaquin Reads Week makes reading fun
Outlook: November issue

At award 1.jpgDuring the week of September 19, San Joaquin A+ hosted a myriad of literacy activities that ensued as part of the 10th Annual San Joaquin Reads Week. The week began with the General Mills 5K Fun Run/Walk, then a parade of marching bands and characters opened the gates to The Record’s Family Day in the Park, where volunteers from various San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) departments hosted a booth in Alphabet Alley.

“The day was filled with laughter and excitment while information regarding the importance of reading was disseminated to more than 1,000 visitors,” said Connie Tate, director of Reading First, Regional Technical Assistance Center. Tate shared that each child who visited the booth received a copy of Where the Wild Things Are in either English or Spanish.

The week commenced with The Spirit of Literacy Awards at Wine & Roses sponsored by Kaiser Permanente. Individuals and organizations were honored at the celebration for contributing to the awareness and development of literacy activities within San Joaquin County. SJCOE Early Childhood Education’s Rural School Readiness program was among the recipients as the Outstanding Literacy Program at the Preschool Level.

The SJCOE Rural School Readiness program serves children ages zero to five and their families living within six rural communities in San Joaquin County. The program offers literacy training for parents, teachers, and child care providers, as well as workshops such as Raising A Reader (RAR) and Training Wheels Mobile Library.
