Health Plan of San Joaquin awards scholarships to future health care workers
Outlook: November issue

healthcare awards.jpgHealth Plan of San Joaquin (HPSJ) recently awarded scholarships of $2,500 and $1,000 to 20 graduating seniors showing promise and interest in a career in the health care industry.

“San Joaquin County is particularly challenged by physician shortages both in primary care and key specialty areas,” said Dale Bishop, M.D., Medical Director for Health Plan of San Joaquin. “HPSJ’s academic scholarships are a proactive strategy to encourage and support a new generation of medical professionals.”

DeAnna Dawson, a senior at Weston Ranch High School, received a $2,500 award and says that this scholarship is helping make her dream of someday becoming a physician into a reality.
“When I was nine, a pediatrician spoke to my class and from that day on I began looking at being a pediatrician—and now everything has fallen into place,” said Dawson.

HPSJ established an outreach campaign in conjunction with San Joaquin County Office of Education’s Educational Foundation. Last school year, HPSJ awarded a total of $35,000 scholarships to graduating seniors throughout the county. HPSJ’s Health Career Scholarships will be offered to graduating seniors again this year in hopes of creating a channel to bring future health care providers back to practice in San Joaquin County.
