Youth Leadership Activities

  • Experience in Democracy – Each year high school students travel to Washington D.C. to learn about government, leaders, and advocates within their communities.
  • University Jumpstart - High school students and their families participate in a nine-month college readiness program that focuses on academic, communication, and advocacy skills needed for college.
  • Migrant Youth Conferences – Youth attend conferences at area colleges and universities.
  • UCLA – Students participate in classes that focus on topics of interest within their communities while learning about teamwork and leadership.
  • Scholarships – An average of $1 million in scholarships and grants are given to migrant high school graduates to help them pursue higher education.
  • Artistas del Sol – The Artessi Labor Camps give students opportunities to explore elements and principles of design by visiting museums, observing murals, and meeting artists.
  • Mini Corp Outdoor Education – Fourth- and fifth-grade students spend five days in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains, where they apply knowledge of science and law learned in the classroom. This trip allows students to develop team-building and communication skills in a safe and beautiful environment.
  • Speech and Debate – This opportunity gives high school students an opportunity to sharpen their public speaking skills and techniques. Each year, more than 10 students are selected to use their talents at the Ventura County Speech and Debate Conference. In 2009, the team won awards and trophies.
  • Migrant Graduation Ceremony – Each year family, friends, and the community gather at Micke Grove Zoo to celebrate the high school graduation of migrant throughout the county.
