Professional Organizations

California Council for the Social Studies

The purpose of this professional social studies organization is to promote the teaching of the social sciences in the State of California. The group provides its members with a newsletter, a journal, an annual conference, and membership in local councils. The local council for teachers from San Joaquin County is the Delta-Central Sierra Social Studies Council. Membership costs range from $35 to $65 depending on the type of membership one desires.

The 45th Annual CCSS Conference, "Roads to Citizenship in a Changing World" will be held March 3-5, 2006 at the Town and Country Hotel in San Diego.


National Council for the Social Studies

Social studies educators teach students the content knowledge, intellectual skills, and civic values necessary for fulfilling the duties of citizenship in a participatory democracy. The mission of National Council for the Social Studies is to provide leadership, service, and support for all social studies educators.

Founded in 1921, National Council for the Social Studies has grown to be the largest association in the country devoted solely to social studies education. NCSS engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies. With members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 69 foreign countries, NCSS serves as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education. Organized into a network of more than 110 affiliated state, local, and regional councils and associated groups, the NCSS membership represents K-12 classroom teachers, college and university faculty members, curriculum designers and specialists, social studies supervisors, and leaders in the various disciplines that constitute the social studies.

National Women's History Project

The National Women's History Project is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1980, that is committed to providing materials for teachers and schools, educational programs for the public, and informational services to recognize and celebrate women's diverse lives and historic contributions to society.

California International Studies Project

The California Internnational Studies Project is one of the nine discipline-based professional development Subject Matter Projects in California. It specializes in interdisciplinary teacher training programs on global geography, economics, foreign policy and intnernational relations themes and world history topics from the California History-Social Science Standards.

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation site has wonderful resources for teachers and students on Colonial American history. There are classroom-tested lesson plans, electronic field trip registration information, a catalog of realia materials to order, and general teaching resources.

Kids and the Law

This site of the California State Bar has terms and topics of interest to parents and students related to youth and the law. These topics will be helpful for students in understanding their roles and responsibilities in a free society. Topics include such issues as curfew, emancipation, truancy, parents' rights and responsibilities, and zero tolerance.

The Freedom Forum First Amendment Center

The Freedom Forum has up-to-date information on court cases deciding First Amendment issues related to press, speech and religion. Also available are copies of the following publications: Finding Common Ground and the "Statement of Principles: Religious Liberty, Public Education, and the Future of American Democracy," and "Parent's Guide to Religion in the Public Schools." It is also possible to e-mail questions about religious liberty issues to Charles Haynes, resident scholar.

California Instructional Technology Clearinghouse

Multimedia curriculum packages, research projects on the Internet, programs designed to use telecommunications to make the home-school connection -- instructional technology is being marketed to California schools today in many formats, in multiple languages, and in support of diverse educational goals. The California Instructional Technology Clearinghouse, administered by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, offers California educators assistance in identification of the highest quality technology resources. Its two divisions, the California Instructional Video Clearinghouse and the California Software Clearinghouse, have been evaluating instructional technology programs for twelve years.

Constitution Day

The California Three Rs

This Project is partly based on ideas in Finding Common Ground by Charles C. Haynes and Oliver Thomas, a First Amendment guide to religion and public education published by the First Amendment Center. The San Joaquin County Historical Museum

The San Joaquin County Historical Museum is located outside of Lodi, California. It was established in 1966 through an agreement between the County of San Joaquin and the San Joaquin County Historical Society. The museum has over 40,000 square feet of exhibit and work space. Our collections have grown from a few hundred items from the estate of William G. and Julia Harrison Micke to over 50,000 items representative of the development of San Joaquin County agriculture and history. The museum was accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1973.
