The San Joaquin County Board of Education consists of five members, with each trustee representing one of five distinct areas within the county. Each trustee serves a six-year term.

The San Joaquin County Board of Education is the elected governing body of the San Joaquin County Office of Education. The Board, in conjunction with the Superintendent, establishes the policies which guide the County Office of Education and approves the annual operating budget. In addition to its policy-making and budgetary functions, the Board approves and confirms changes in school district boundaries, identifies educational needs and services in the county, and serves as an appeal board of such actions as interdistrict attendance requests and student expulsions.
