The Delta Sierra Region VI AVID office, housed at the San Joaquin County Office of Education, provides coordination and support for schools implementing AVID programs in Amador, Calaveras, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties. The AVID program is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance by ensuring that all students, especially traditionally underserved students in the middle, succeed in a rigorous curriculum, enter mainstream activities of the school and increase their enrollment in four-year colleges. The regional AVID support team provides workshops and on-site coaching to assist schools and districts as they strive to become "certified" - based on eleven program essentials that are critical to the success of the program. As an academic support program for students in grades six through 12 that operates within the regular school day, AVID provides students with educational access and equity. Students enrolled in AVID elective courses benefit from the use of effective research-based strategies such as; writing as a tool for learning, collaborative problem-solving, critical reading and inquiry. Academic instruction, coupled with tutorial support and exposure to post-secondary opportunities create unique complexities of the AVID elective class.
