Christopher Funge SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY’S 2006-07 TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Making a difference and shaping young minds as a teacher was probably not at the forefront of a young man’s mind, fresh out of college as a history major. However, almost two decades later, Christopher Funge’s passion and ability to make a difference in his students’ lives shines. A teacher from Lodi Unifi ed School District (LUSD), Funge is honored as San Joaquin County’s 2006-07 Teacher of the Year.
Funge’s colleagues say he has a natural ability to connect with students, but he credits his own teachers for the skill and passion that shaped him into the teacher he is today. His journey began 19 years ago as a substitute teacher for LUSD. This exposure to the fi eld of education, and the non-traditional approach used to teach him while in school, showed Funge that he could make a difference. These experiences led him to his third-grade position at Ellerth E. Larson Elementary School.
“Every once in a while a teacher comes along that shines a bit brighter than other teachers,” said fellow third-grade teacher Carol Wood. “This year I have had the pleasure of working with such a teacher, Chris Funge.”
Funge’s involvement in the community is highly impressive. He has made an impact by volunteering as a coach for the six and under Seals Swim Team, organizing Star Tours and School Star Parties for the Stockton Astronomical Society, and through his memberships in San Joaquin County Historical Museum and Micke Grove Zoo. His most signifi cant contribution is his work as a teacher and shaping the individuals he educates.
“Mr. Funge’s ongoing display of enthusiasm, creativity, and caring are almost contagious and he is well respected, albeit admired, by his students, their parents, and his professional colleagues throughout LUSD,” said Principal Cheryl Nilmeyer of Larson.
Each year San Joaquin County selects one Teacher of the Year from applicants throughout the area’s 15 local school districts.
