Charles Foreman: Driven by Determination

Not having a place to call home is difficult at any age, especially during adolescent years. As an 18 year-old foster youth, Charles Foreman is accustomed to moving in and out of foster homes. Although this teen never thought much would come of his future, since becoming a part of Foster Youth Services (FYS) his dreams have reached new heights.

After being separated from his sister in sixth grade, and losing what he thought was his last chance for adoption, Charles hit what he calls 'rock bottom.' "I stopped caring," said Charles. "I felt like nobody was looking out for me or loved me. Above all, it felt as if the world was against me." Over the next few years, Charles was removed from a few foster homes for bad behavior. This pattern broke when he enrolled in one.Success, an alternative education high school. In addition to providing him with academics, it connected him with Foster Youth Services, an educational advocacy program that provides students like Charles with education-related services.

After working with one. teachers and FYS counselor Lonita Cordova, he gained the support he needed. "That's when I realized there are people who care and want me to make it in life," said Charles. "I lean on them for strength to get through hard times."

Foster Youth Services helped Charles by providing tutoring, helping him find a job, and offering guidance and encouragement.

Lonita believes support is the key to success. "Charles just needed some assistance and stability," said Lonita. "He needed to know adults are out there who want to help and believe in him."

Charles never dreamed of graduating high school, let alone attending college. After receiving his high school diploma, Charles enrolled in San Joaquin Delta College and gained a position through WorkNet as a cashier at McDonald's. Although he is unsure about career choices, Charles hopes to continue his studies in physical therapy or engineering at a four-year university.

More importantly, his newfound dedication is to be proud of the life he lives. Driven by the determination to 'break the cycle,' Charles will one day be a support for others. "When I have children, I want to be there for them," said Charles. "That is why I am trying to better myself and be successful in life."

Foster Youth Services is funded by the California Department of Education learning Support and Partnerships Division. In accordance with Assembly Bill 490, it ensures immediate enrollment, guidance, and support for students placed in group or foster homes. FYS also provides assistance and training to probation, human services, group homes, and foster family agencies in San Joaquin County.
