Olympic Gold Medalist ANDRE PHILLIPS: Project IMPACT Star
In 1992, former Olympic gold medalist, Andre Phillips, hung up his track spikes to tackle the hurdles found in the classroom. For Andre, the hand-off from track star to special education teacher was opportune.
Although the 1988 400-meter Olympic gold medalist always thought about becoming a teacher, he finally took a stride in this direction at the end of his athletic career. As a substitute teacher, Andre often contemplated getting his teaching credential. However, going back to school full-time did not seem feasible – until he discovered Project IMPACT, a teacher intern program through San Joaquin County Office of Education. The program provided him with the opportunity to teach full-time while earning his credential and receiving monetary compensation. “This program was the choice for me,” said Andre. “It was not only convenient, but it allowed me the flexibility that I needed.”
Project IMPACT allows participants like Andre to earn a teaching salary, gain on-the-job training, and receive credits toward tenure. Moreover, as a giant funded program, students pay only a fraction of the price compared to other teacher preparation programs.
All the while, Andre worked with other individuals in a cohort, a group of people who began the program at the same time. “One of the best parts of the program was my cohort,” said Andre. “As problems arose in the classroom, I was able to discuss the issues with my peers, as well as experienced professionals in class.” Even now, Andre keeps in close contact with these individuals. He, as well as others from his cohort, went on to receive a Masters Degree and Administrative Credential.
For more than 15 years, Andre has shared his enthusiasm for education with the students of Stockton Unified School District, first as a substitute teacher, then as an intern for Project IMPACT, followed by being a teacher, and now assistant principal at Edison High School. “I credit Project IMPACT for the smooth transition and preparation for the position I have today,” said Andre.
While once he was provided with medals for his accomplishments, making a difference in the lives of children is now Andre’s award.
