Anacelia Germann Uncovers Her
   Passions

Luckily for Anacelia Germann, the number 13 does not live up to its superstitious reputation. Instead, it represents a family and support system for this Venture Academy student.

After immigrating from Mexico, Anacelia was adopted at the age of 12 by Charles and Frances Germann. As she began to adjust to a new family and atmosphere, Anacelia started school at SJCOE’s Venture Academy Charter School. With a small school setting, Anacelia escaped what could have been an overwhelming transition. It provided her with multiple opportunities that helped guide her to find her personal strengths and interests.

“I never wanted to go in front of the school and speak, but Venture has helped me learn not to be afraid of showing others who I am,” said Anacelia.

Currently a junior, Anacelia has taken advantage of the Student Leadership and Performing Arts Academy (SLAPA). Within this program, she was able to discover her passion for dance and incorporate it into her daily school schedule. From this experience, Anacelia has taken on a leadership position as an assistant dance teacher at the Stockton School of Performing Arts.

“The openness of the teachers at Venture helped her blossom and provided her with opportunities that larger schools do not have,” said Kathy Focacci, Director of Venture Academy.

Through the direct one-on-one attention from teachers, Anacelia learned how to build stronger relationships with family members, students, and teachers and to continue her role as a leader, as well as develop herself socially. At 16, she is currently the basketball captain, SJCOE’s Outlook: The Television Show host, and a Rio Calaveras Elementary school volunteer where she assists teachers and students. Anacelia’s mother now describes her daughter as a “social butterfly”.

“She has changed a lot since she has been in this family and at Venture,” explains Frances. “She is not the same person she was when she first moved here.”

With a year left before graduation, Venture’s support will continue even after the tassel is turned. As Anacelia explores the realm of possibilities on the pathway toward her future, she will continue to fulfill Venture’s philosophy of life-long learning. Her aspirations include pursuing cosmetology through the Regional Occupation Program (ROC/P), which works in partnership with Venture. Through ROC/P, Anacelia will be provided with formal classes and on-the-job training that are incorporated into high school courses, as a guide toward her career.

“Thanks to her support system, both at home and here at Venture, she has experienced a lot of success and growth,” said Linda Melson, counselor at Venture Academy.
