Our County
San Joaquin County is located in northern California, 75 miles east of San Francisco, 50 miles south of Sacramento (the state capital), and 75 miles from the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains. The county population is approximately 664,116 people. The majority of the county's residents (271,466) live in Stockton. The cities of Lodi, Manteca, Tracy, Ripon, Escalon, Linden, and Lathrop are also in San Joaquin County.
The ethnic breakdown of the population is 42.4 percent white, 33.9 percent Hispanic, 7.7 percent African-American, 13.5 percent Asian/Pacific Islander, 1.3 percent American Indian, and 3 percent other.
San Joaquin County is one of the original 27 counties of California and was named by the Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga in honor of St. Joachim in 1813. Since that time San Joaquin County has become a major agricultural region and transportation center.
There are more than 135,000 students in grades K-12 in the 15 school districts within San Joaquin County. Of these 15 school districts seven districts are unified with Stockton Unified School District being the largest with 39,000 students. Five of the 15 districts are small, rural, one-school school districts with a student population between 173 students and 315 students. San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton enrolls more than 15,000 students, and University of the Pacific has more than 6,000 students.
