Public education is an essential component of the strength of our democratic society and it gives our children the tools necessary to become successful members of our community. The San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) is committed to working to improve public education so that every child has an opportunity to receive a high-quality education.
My 30 years in both public and private education started in West Africa, where I coached basketball and taught physical education as a Peace Corps volunteer. I watched my students grow as they learned their lessons and built their futures. It kindled in me a passion for teaching that set the course for a career in education. From the time I received my credential and began teaching math in Richmond, Calif., until I took on my current role as the San Joaquin County superintendent of schools, that passion has only grown.
At the SJCOE, our core mission is to serve the most at-risk and severely disabled students in the county. We also play a vital role providing services, training, and support across the 14 school districts and charter schools that educate our approximately 144,000 public school students.
In 2013, the state of California enacted the most sweeping reform of school finance since the passage of Proposition 13 in 1978. With the implementation of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAP), local school districts and their school communities have more discretion in how to best utilize their resources to meet the needs of their students. The support provided by the SJCOE is increasingly important to ensure that local decisions are focused on improving student achievement. Working together with our school districts and charter schools, we are striving to improve education for all students in San Joaquin County.
It is exciting to be a part of the collaboration helping public education build the future of our county, state, and country: our children.
