The San Joaquin County Board of Education prepares the Expulsion Appeal Handbook to assist expelled pupils and the parents or guardians of expelled pupils to understand the appeal process and the rights of the pupil.

The appeal process begins by filing, in writing, a notice of appeal with the San Joaquin County Board of Education. Such notice shall be filed within 30 days following the decision of the local governing board to expel, even in a case where that governing board suspends enforcement of the expulsion in order to assign the pupil to a program of rehabilitation.
